Lessons in Layering: 5 Outfit Ideas From the Impossibly Chic Streets of Milan

Quick check of the weather outside and—yup—still pretty damn cold. While we shiver and wait for spring to finally make an appearance, at least we can continue playing with all the layering combinations possible. Hey, if anything, that’s a consolation, right? So let’s revisit the streets of Milan Fashion Week for some devastatingly chic ideas to pile on the fashion and stay warm.

Obviously recent style icon of the week and front-row fixture Miroslava Duma has a lockdown on the layering thing. She went 99 percent monochrome (and tried out the culotte look seen all over the runways) in Russian designer Alexander Terekhov’s oxblood suit and turtleneck ensemble.

Zhana Bianca doubles up on the polka dots in a matched coat and dress set, while she keeps warm in opaque tights and black pumps.

Ece Sukan plays with lots of layered elements: a leather moto jacket by Umit Benan over a striped Dries van Noten boyfriend sweater over a lace-underlay skirt, plus ankle socks paired with peep-toe sandals.

Sarah Nicole Rosetto skillfully mixes winter and spring in a pink coat layered over an emerald green turtleneck and pleated printed skirt. Her bare legs are screaming summer though.

Helena Bordon pairs a dressy graphic sweatshirt over a very on-trend midiskirt. And seeing that Fashion Week does tend to set off an allergy to hosiery, she opts for bright red pumps and bare legs. But the rest of us could work this look with a pair of ladylike tall boots instead.
