It is a truth universally acknowledged that free time is best spent playing around with your hair. OK, fine, it’s not a given, but I dare you to play around with your hair for a while and have at least a little bit of fun, which is why I’m psyched this surprising hair trend has popped up just in time for a holiday weekend.

The trend I’d like you wall to attempt: The hairpins-as-hair-accessories look. It showed up last week at a screening of House of Cards at the Directors Guild of America theater on Kate Mara.

And on the British Plus-Size Fashion Weekend show during London Fashion Week (here on David Hasselhoff’s daughter Hayley).

The best part of this trend? There’s no right or wrong way to go go about it; it’s just all about creating a shape you’re into by tucking in bobby pins as you like. You can spread them out evenly, group them together, or crisscross them a la Kate Mara’s look. Just play around and get creative!
